One more cast… (too many)!

When leaving a hot fishing session, cries of “one more cast” abound.

This time we had one more cast too many and got smashed by a storm. Heading back to Mood Swings in the blue boat was not fun!

Especially when we discovered yet another issue.

Although anchored in the sand, the squall swung her around and caught her anchor chain on a bommie.

Not pleasant to deal with a storm bearing down.

The culprit. One more cast near Martin Reef.

With bad weather looming and no internet reception for days holed up at Lizard island, we decided to make a run to Martin Reef.

Calls and orders sorted, we had a lovely swim near Martin Cay.

Having been holed up in Watson’s Bay, we were running low on fish, so we headed off to stock up.

Turns out it was a pretty hot session but with the clouds getting darker, one more cast became the catch cry.

Knowing we were soon going to be stuck at Watson’s Bay for a week, we were super keen on some tasty red fish.

Find out what happens when we have one more cast too many in the latest episode.

ONE MORE CAST AND OUR DAY AT MARTIN CAY

Martin sand Cay, Far North Queensland
Lizard Island as the backdrop and stunning weather on arrival. It’s no wonder we had to have “just one more cast.”
dog and woman in water
Karen and the sea dogs chillin in the shallows of Martin Cay. It’s sometimes hard to find a location to can go ashore with dogs. But they just love sand cays. Martin Reef and Cay are not national parks so in our estimation it’s not real land so it’s ok. If the land adjacent to the beach is a national park (or on a national park island like Lizard Island) you cannot take dogs to the beach or tidal lands.
Chinaman fish
Pull like a steam train but can carry ciguatera. Hence chinaman fish is a no-take species. I’ve had ciguatera and it’s not something you’d even wish on your enemies (Except the guy that bodgied our boat in 2016. Karma I say!)
One last cast resulted in this nice scarlet sea perch.
One last cast resulted in this chunky little Nanny-gai coming home for dinner. Otherwise known as saddletail sea perch or scarlet sea perch. They are great for eating. Note the storm clouds brewing. The Palmarius blank made short work of the fight. If you’d like a rod made contact my mate Ronnie from Salty Dog custom rods.
One last cast too many and we ended up in the eye of the storm.
One last cast too many and we ended up in the eye of the storm. Was it worth it? Kicked myself later but we were smiling at the time.
