Embark on an extraordinary adventure as we take you with us on a journey circumnavigating Lizard Island in North Queensland.

Known for its tropical beauty and incredible marine biodiversity, Lizard Island offers a haven for nature enthusiasts, anglers and adventure seekers.

The Enchanting Allure of Circumnavigating Lizard Island

Circumnavigating Lizard Island allows you to fully immerse yourself in the splendors of this tropical paradise.

As you travel around the island, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of pristine white sand beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and towering rock faces.

This adventure offers an opportunity to explore hidden coves, waterfalls, witness diverse marine life.

And discover secluded beaches that can only be accessed by boat. Sadly some are covered in rubbish – as you’ll see in the video below.

Planning Your Circumnavigation Adventure

Before embarking on a circumnavigation, first you’ve got to get there.

Of course we travel on our 40 foot vessel Mood Swings, but in good weather you can get there in a smaller (7 metre) boat.

You can find out more about camping on the island from our previous blog post. Or visit the QPWS website. There is also a luxury resort on the island.

Delving into the Great Barrier Reef’s Wonders

Circumnavigating Lizard Island offers a gateway to one of the world’s most remarkable natural wonders—the Great Barrier Reef.

As you explore the surrounding waters, you’ll have the chance to snorkel or dive in vibrant coral gardens teeming with a kaleidoscope of marine life.

Encounter majestic manta rays, playful sea turtles, and an array of colorful fish species, including snorkelling with super friendly coral trout in the Watson’s bay green zone. On a previous trip we swam with a whale shark!

Capture awe-inspiring underwater moments as you explore the underwater paradise.

Discovering Lizard Island’s Hidden Gems

Circumnavigating the island grants you exclusive access to its hidden gems.

Anchor near Watson’s Bay, a snorkeler’s paradise boasting magnificent coral bommies and abundant marine biodiversity.

Take a short hike to Cook’s Look, the island’s highest point, and relish the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding reef and azure waters.

Uncover secluded beaches where you can relax, swim, and bask in the serenity of nature.

Join us on our journey, circumnavigating Lizard Island.

FISH FINDER FUNDAMENTALS

Going remote in a boat is easier if you can catch good eating fish regularly.

Doing so requires a good understanding of your fish finding equipment.

Sounder Skills is only $20 Australian at the moment and well worth a look.

If you don’t learn anything let me know and I’ll give you your money back

TRIP HIGHLIGHTS

Boats anchored in remote tropical island bay
Circumnaviagting Lizard Island starts in Watson’s Bay. Most boats will be anchored here unless a westerly kicks in – then we all move around into Blue Lagoon.
Remote tropical beach - Coconut beach
Coconut beach is an idyllic location but sadly seems to be a collection point for rubbish. Groups like Tangaroa Blue do clean ups in remote areas like this and are always looking for donations or volunteers (even better).
Micro plastics floating on water found during while circumnavigating Lizard Island, north Queensland
Wind and tide seems to collect rubbish in certain areas. Thankfully this was only found in a small area and most of the beaches are pristine.
Woman walking on remote tropical beach
Ahh the serenty. Why this is one of our favourite locations to return every year… This isolated gem is on South (Newt) Island – one of the satellite islands in Blue Lagoon. The experience offers a moment of pure tranquility, allowing you to connect with nature and appreciate the stunning beauty surrounding you.
Circumnavigating Lizard Island - drone shot of boat driving through coral passage.
Exiting the coral passage out of Blue Lagoon
Waterfall from island rocks into the sea
An unexpected gem. Due to the unusually high rainfall the night before, water was cascading from the rocks above, over this waterfall into the sea.
Shark deparadation. Only reeled in half a fish.
No matter how remote you go, shark depredation is still an issue. This poor chinaman fish would have been released, but died unnecessarily.
Fishing while circumnavigating Lizard island
Fishing while circumnavigating Lizard island was a fun break in the journey. Our RMF Levitator jig doing the damage as usual.

Circumnavigating Lizard Island is a captivating adventure that unveils the true essence of this tropical paradise.

From the awe-inspiring wonders of the Great Barrier Reef to secluded beaches waiting to be discovered.

Lizard Island offers an unforgettable experience for those seeking natural beauty and marine encounters.

It really is one of our favourite places. Which is why we keep coming back.
