Ryan's Story

I'm proud to have been helping people like you catch bucket list fish for over 30 years. During my fishing career, I held my hard earned secrets VERY close to my chest (typical fisherman ha-ha).

But now my charter years are finished and I'm ready to share my secrets through my online courses. Call it my legacy.

Ryan’s Story

One of the things I’m often asked is:

“HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN ALL THIS?”

Well… They say I was 3 when my Dad dragged me kicking and screaming into the boat for my first Maggie Island fishing
trip. They also say he had to drag me out when the trip was complete.

Guess I was hooked from the start.

By 16 I was on the mackerel boats and at 18 was rubbing shoulders with the likes of INXS, the King and Queen of Sweden
and boxing legend Barry Michaels chasing giant black marlin off the shelf.

In 1989 we took out the Sheraton international billfish tournament as well as the 4th Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic as well as second in the Australian International Billfish Tournament and second in the Dunk Island Billfish Classic. I had the pleasure to work alongside some of the best game fishing skippers in Australia including Greg Edwards, Calvin Tilley and Chris Jones.

I have been lucky enough to see the most amazing things during my career on the water in one of the most beautiful
locations in the world, the Great Barrier Reef.

1989 was also the year I started my own fishing charter business, now Ryan Moody Fishing
So far I have had the privilege of assisting clients catch a milestone 2000 barra over one metre and fulfil their dreams of
joining the metre barra club. That’s over 2 kilometres of metre plus fish.

It’s been a wild old ride, with green zones wiping out my reef business and two category 5 cyclones wreaking havoc, and
at times I was so close to giving it all away… but I can’t.

I love putting people onto fish. I think I get a little high, it gives me such a thrill.

And I am even more excited about the future. It gives me such pleasure to have witnessed the swing away from catch
and kill to catch and release.

It seems hard to believe, but the euphoria of catching such a magnificent Australian sports fish is actually surpassed by
the emotional rush of letting it go.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be featured in several successful fishing shows, radio broadcasts and popular fishing
magazines. I hold the honour of landing the 2 biggest saltwater barra ever caught on Australian TV (Eddie Riddle’s Fishin
4 Wheels). I wrote a regular column for Queensland Fishing Monthly (QFM) and was a Product Ambassador for Evinrude
(BRP) outboards, Garmin Marine Electronics and Jarvis Walker Brands here in Australia.

I met my lovely wife Karen when I was still doing charters, and she was an award-winning Marine Biologist.

Our first course was born in 2014 when we combined forces, my knowledge of fishing, and her ability to extract it into
easy frameworks that anyone can learn.
