Fishing with poppers on massive tides around islands

Fishing massive tides around islands

Fishing massive tides around islands has it’s own set of challenges.

When faced with rapid like tides over rock bars and between islands, topwater fishing is a great option.

Going to any new area requires reconnaissance. I always like to start my look around at low tide.

Our previous blog shows you how to do land-based low tide reconnaisance.

When boat based, you can not only identify some top fishing opportunities for later in the tide.

But also identify hazards to boating.

Topwater is a great option when fishing massive tides around islands.

Lures of choice are poppers and shallow divers when the run is hard.

It all comes down to what happens on different tidal movements.

By looking at the way headlands are structured, you can generally find areas where the run is slower.

Our Finding Fingermark course has some good examples of finding areas around headlands in periods of large tidal run.

When the run is slower you can use live bait, or jigs like our Levitator and sinking stick baits like our Pillager.

No matter what your technique, fishing massive tides around islands can be very productive.

Fishing massive tides can be challenging!

Coral trout caught on popper
Coral trout readily take poppers. Casting lures is always the most exciting fishing, watching the fish rise to them and feeling the full force of the strike.
Cotal trout caught on popper
Another victim to a well placed popper in the running water fishing massive tides. Reconnaissance of the area at low tide was helpful in identifying these areas.
