Live bait challenge

Eating live bait challenge

Chasing black jew in the Duke Islands and decided to add some pressure with an eating live bait challenge.

Rules are simple.

Catch a black jew or eat the live bait!

First step in the live bait challenge is catching the live bait!

We used a bottom pocket cast net on the beaches and we use the off the wrist technique to stay clean and dry.

After picking up some nice size mullet and legal whiting, we hit the water looking for our jewie school from the day before.

The Duke Islands in Central Queensland are a privately owned archipelago boosting great fishing.

Because they are privately owned, they can be reached by plane if you are staying at the homestead or via boat from Stanage Bay.

Despite the 600 knots of wind and huge tides limiting fishing options, we found the area very productive.

Using sounder skills we also jigged up some livies to add to the live bait challenge.

THE KEY TO GREAT CATCHES IS MASTERY OF YOUR ELECTRONICS

EATING LIVE BAIT CHALLENGE

Jigging for live bait
Jigging for live bait is an effective way to catch them. Hope I don’t have to eat these though! Check out our Locating Livies course for all the shortcuts to a full bait tank.
Whiting or mullet for live bait.
Legal size whiting and large poddy mullet make great live bait! Not bad eating either. Lucky we got those whiting! Use them last!
Naturally plumbed live bait tank.
I have a naturally plumbed live bait tank built into each of my custom boats. They will keep most baits alive for long periods. We once forgot about some mullet in the tank and they suvived 8 days! The key is the natural flushing due to holes in the bottom of the boat.
Red Emperor
It might not be a black jew so a fail for the live bait challenge, but I know what I’m eating tonight!
