Our Fish Smarter programs are definitely an investment, but if you want your fishing to improve you can’t stagnate.

Fish are not like koalas. It’s very difficult to predict their movements as they swim around underwater, which is why only the very best anglers catch most of the fish.

To hire Ryan for just one day (we no longer offer this service) used to cost upwards of $1500 and you only got to learn about fishing the conditions of that day. The courses are filmed over a year, taking into account many contingencies and helping anglers to think on their feet when conditions change.

Actually, Ryan’s take on gear, tackle and equipment is that it’s one of the least important things. The most expensive rod and reel in the world won’t catch you more fish unless you’re fishing ON the fish at the right time.

Over decades on the water, Ryan has worked out fish movements, making it much easier to find and catch good fish and not waste money on fuel and lost tackle for little result.

Yes, we do talk about some great tools and tackle to use, but far more important is to use what you have in the right setting – to maximize its potential. It’s this “fishing strategy” that makes all the difference.

Common concern #3: “What if this course takes all of your time and there’s none left for the me/the family/your job?”

Ryan and his marine biologist wife Karen have worked out a structure with concept videos, and demo videos, that will take about 7 hours (one hour a day for one week) to complete – depending on how active you want to be in the community. There are no frills and fluff in these courses.

And because there is lifetime access, the course can be paused and revisited at any time.

You’ll be able to plan your fishing days around the most productive periods in your area based on a simple framework centred around tidal run. So armed with only a tide chart, trips can be pre-planned around important family events a year in advance (weather dependent of course).

Not to mention these skills can be passed down to other family members – fishing is more fun when you’re catching and it encourages the kids to get off the computer and into the outdoors.

Last but not least, fresh wild-caught fish are so good for you. Most of the fish you purchase now is imported from crowded fish farms in polluted water overseas. It’s expensive and not good for you – instead feed them freshly caught local fish.

Pretty much anyone can create content for YouTube these days, write blogs, and contribute to fishing magazines. Most have a day job and fish on the weekends. They may have nutted out one species at one location, but the big picture takes years and years of trial and error to develop.

Much of their content is regurgitated from other “part-time” anglers, with any gold hidden in a mish-mash of tips and tricks that can also contain rubbish. How do you know what is good info for you in your circumstance and what is not?
