Module 1 - Using Sonar With Strategy

Module 1 is all about strategy. It’s in Module 1 that you are introduced to the concepts required to understand and use your fish finder in the most efficient and productive way. The first thing we cover is the BIG PICTURE – using your unit for the right APPLICATION. Are you searching, assessing or observing. Then we look at the basic concepts that determine where in relation to your boat, are the fish or structure.

Module 2 - Set Up And Tuning

Module 2 is about getting the best picture. And by best picture I don’t mean getting the prettiest cleanest blue on your screen. This is not art class. It’s getting the unit to show you a TRUE picture of what is down there based on simple criteria and a step-by-step approach. It will save you endless frustration fiddling with your set and less time fishing. Remember the key is to see fish when there ARE fish and to see big fish when they ARE big fish.

Learn the main settings to get a picture that reflects what is actually there.
Watch for key distinctions that tell you if you have your settings RIGHT.
Learn what to look for (external cues) to help you tune your unit correctly. Remember when conditions change you’ll need to tweak your settings.

Side image and Down View: Contrast and brightness.
Range, Zoom, TVG.
Get a good picture with example after example especially what to do in bad weather days (the only days we get to go fishing right?)

Module 3 - Practical Use

Module 3: Practical Use. This is the pointy end where all the hard work pays off. At the end of this module you’ll be able to:

Assess an area for fish and decide if it’s worth fishing
Search an area for structure and assess that structure for “fish-ability”
Determine where fish are in relation to the boat.
Confidently anchor and fish “on the fish” even on small structure.
Troubleshoot transducer issues
Get your naming conventions right (keeping your marks tidy)
Use your GPS in conjunction with your sounder to locate and fish on targets with pin point accuracy.

I've only recently started offshore fishing. Is this course suitable for me?

If you are new to offshore fishing but serious about improving, yes.

This is not a boating course. It assumes you can operate your vessel safely offshore. What we focus on is how to think, plan and make better fishing decisions once you are there.

The first two modules are designed to get everyone up to speed. For newer anglers, they build a solid foundation. For more experienced fishos, they often serve as useful revision and help tighten up gaps in their approach.

Many beginners actually progress quickly because they learn the right framework from the start instead of developing habits that need fixing later.

You will also have access to the private student study group for 12 months. That is where beginners can ask questions, share screenshots, and learn from Ryan and experienced anglers who are applying the same system.

I'm already experienced offshore. Will I still learn anything?

If you have been fishing offshore for years and catch good fish, that is great.

But there is a big difference between catching fish and fully understanding the patterns.

Most experienced anglers have solid days, but struggle with repeatability. When the run changes, the current pushes harder than expected, or the sharks move in, confidence drops and decision-making becomes reactive.

That is where a structured system makes the difference.

Sounder Skills 2 focuses on setting up and tuning your electronics properly, understanding frequencies, beam angles and learning how to interpret what you’re seeing on the screen.

It’s about identifying high-probability areas using charts, geology, current and habitat — then using your sounder to assess them properly.

They complement each other well.

Is this the same as Wonky Holes, Catching Coral Trout or Finding Fingermark?

No. Each course focuses on different zones and levels of specialisation.

Catching Coral Trout focuses on coral reef systems and the specific habitat patterns that hold coral trout and other reef species. It’s a reef fishing strategy built around coral structure and trout behaviour.

Wonky Holes is a specialist course. It focuses on locating and fishing underwater spring systems and the specific habitat patterns that consistently hold large mouth nannygai. It’s very targeted.

Finding Fingermark is the nearshore equivalent of Offshore Opportunities. It focuses on structure and habitat in shallower, closer-in areas where fingermark and similar species live.

The Ultimate Offshore System sits further out inside the continental shelf. It covers the broader offshore paddock — ledges, rubble pads, riverbeds, shoals, isolates and foraging areas — and targets a range of quality demersals including nannygai, red emperor, pink snapper, pearl perch and more.

There is some species overlap. For example, you might catch nannygai or snapper using principles from multiple courses.

But the difference is in the habitat focus and level of specialisation.

Many of our students go on to complete more than one course as their confidence grows and they decide to specialise further. They often tell us the frameworks complement each other and help them see the bigger picture.

You don’t need them all to succeed.

But they are designed to build on each other.

Will this work in my area?

If you are targeting offshore demersal species that relate to structure and current, then yes.

While the course footage is filmed in Australian waters, the framework was designed to work worldwide.

Fish fill ecological niches. The names change from region to region, but their habits are remarkably similar. Red emperors in Queensland, snapper in southern states, groupers and snapper in Florida, they all relate to structure, current and feeding zones in predictable ways.

We have students in over 80+ countries, and one of the most common pieces of feedback from anglers outside North Queensland is that they were surprised how well the principles translated to their own waters.

The key is to look for the similarities, not the differences.

The Ultimate Offshore System is built around habitat, current flow, positioning and assessment - not postcode.

If your target species live on offshore structure and respond to run and bait movement, the framework applies.

Do I need expensive electronics to do this course?

No.

A modern 3-in-1 transducer (2D, Down Imaging and Side Imaging) will give you more detail and make searching easier. Down Imaging in the 455–800 kHz range and Side Imaging in the 455–260 kHz range are very useful offshore. Relief shading and quality bathymetric charts also make pre-trip planning far more efficient.

But you do not need top-end gear to benefit from this course.

Ryan was catching quality offshore fish 30 years ago with electronics that would be considered very basic by today’s standards. The difference wasn’t the technology. It was understanding habitat, current and positioning.

No.

Spot Lock makes boat positioning easier, but it is not essential.

The course covers positioning whether you use an electric motor or traditional anchoring methods.
